How many shirts should a man own? I believe a man should own at least six different shirts.
Now this is the bare minimum. The six shirts would consist of three casual shirts and three professional shirts. Let me explain.
This is a question that doesn’t have a definitive answer, but there are some guidelines that can help you make a decision.
Here are a few things to consider when trying to determine how many shirts you need.
1. types of occasions
First, think about the types of occasions you’ll be dressing for. If you only need casual shirts for work or weekends, then you won’t need as many as someone who needs dress shirts for work and formal occasions.
When you think about it, there are really only two settings/occasions we attend, a casual setting and a professional setting.
Depending on each person, it may not be 50-50. If you work in an office, then you would most likely be going to professional settings more than you go to casual settings.
With that being said, you would maybe opt to have more professional shirts than casual shirts.
If you work from home, then you could possibly get away with wearing more casual clothes and doing the good ole’ “keep the camera off” during Zoom meetings.
Some casual shirts include t-shirts, denim shirts, and flannel shirts.
Assuming you attend both types of settings, it would be a good idea to have an equal amount of casual shirts and professional shirts.
2. personal style
Second, consider how often you’ll be wearing each shirt. If you are somebody who likes wearing a new shirt everyday, then you would need more shirts than somebody who doesn’t mind wearing the same shirt for a couple or even a few days in a row.
For example, let’s say you work in an office for five days a week. That’s a professional setting. This means you would need at least five professional looking shirts if you like to wear a new shirt everyday.
If you didn’t mind wearing the same shirt 2-3 times before washing it, then you would only need two or three professional looking shirts. But look, I’m talking bare minimums here of course.
This is why I believe you need at least six shirts consisting of three professional shirts and three casual shirts, taking into account that you are somebody who is fine with wearing the same shirt at least twice within the same week.
3. quality over quantity
Lastly, it’s important to consider quality over quantity. It’s better to have fewer, higher-quality shirts than a bunch of low-quality shirts.
This is because the higher-quality shirts will last longer, look better, and feel more comfortable.
Plus, you’ll be less likely to get tired of them as quickly.
So, even if you have to spend a little bit more money upfront, it’s worth it in the long run.
In conclusion, there is no definitive answer to how many shirts a man should own.
It depends on factors such as the types of occasions you’ll be dressing for, your personal style, and the quality of the shirts.
However, I believe a man should have at least six different shirts in his wardrobe consisting of three casual shirts and three professional shirts. What do you think?
